away from Bling Bling:
Main Market Square:
one of the largest town squares in all of Europe, still true to its 1257
original design. Its considered one of the best examples medieval town
design.
Sukiennice
Cloth Hall: standing majestically in the center of the main square,
it was built in the 14th century and is still in use. Today, it is a vibrant
market selling a wide variety ethnic crafts and souvenirs including leather,
ceramic and glass items crafted by local artisans.
St.
Adalbertís Church: Oldest church in town dating back to the
10th century whose basement features an exhibition of archeological finds
from around the square.
St.
Mary's Church: a breathtaking architectural achievement this 13th
century church effortlessly blends various artistic styles from Gothic
to Baroque to Art Nouveau. The medieval interior is alive to colorful
paintings and exquisite woodcarvings-but all eyes are immediately drawn
to the high altar. This elaborate altar is delicately carved and a masterpiece
of Polish gothic art.
Czartoryski
Museum: houses a famous collection of old European paintings, mainly
Italian, Dutch and Flemish including da Vinci and Rembrandt.
Krakow's
National Musuem: Gallery of 19th century Polish Painting.
Universitet
Jagielonski: founded in 1367 its one of the oldest universities in
Europe. The 15th century Collegium Maius is a gorgeous example of gothic
architecture and inside is housed the university's collection of rare
16th century scientific tools as well as the world's oldest globe (1510).
10 minute walk from Bling Bling:
Wawel
Castle: the seat of the Polish kings for over half a millennium, this
imposing castle is majestically perched between the Vistula River and
the old town. Although the original residence was built in the early 11th
century, the current castle is Renaissance style built in 1499. A visit
to the castle is not complete without exploring the infamous royal crypts
and crown armory.
15 minute walk from Bling Bling:
Kazimiez:
the old Jewish quarter, this section of town boasts a fascinating blend
of past and present. The streets are filled with reminders of the past
along with an eclectic mix of trendy cafes, restaurants, pubs and shops.
Daytrips:
Wieliczka Salt Mine:
this UNESCO world heritage site has been operating for the past 700 years.
The mine is an extensive collection of tunnels and artistic carvings in
salt done by miners over the years. But the highlight of any visit to
this historic mine is the Chapel of Blessed Kinga- ornate carvings adorn
this chapel that is over 300m underground and made entirely of salt!
Auschwitz-Birkenau:
this chilling landmark is 60km outside of Krakow and makes for an easy
daytrip. Both camps are open to the public. The visitor center offers
an on-site museum as well as good guided tours.
Ojcow National
Park: excellent hiking trails leading you past picturesque castles
and impressive rock formations. This woodland teaming with a wide variety
of plant and animal life offers a quiet sanctuary from the vibrant city.
Dunajec
River Gorge: Rafting is a popular activity in the summer months on
the Dunajec river that winds along dramatic cliffs and deciduous forests
to a spectacular gorge.
